Q&A: Kool Aid Pickles – Koolickles!?

Question by senorarroz: Kool Aid Pickles – Koolickles!?
I saw them on Alton Brown’s Feasting on Asphalt and had to try them. Found the recipe online. My students loved them. Some friends really hated them. Have you tried them? What did you think. Ways to use them? I have a friend who will be trying them in her potato salad in place of sweet pickles. Here’s the recipe if you want to join in.

Kool-Aid Pickles
(Koolickles)

1 46 oz jar of dill pickles
1 cup sugar
2 cups water
2 packets of cherry Kool Aid
Drain and discard the pickle juice. Slice pickles in half lengthwise. Return pickles to jar and set aside. Mix the Kool Aid and add to jar until pickles are covered. Let soak in refrigerator at least 24 hours – the longer the better. I like to use the giant jugs of pickles and I double the amount of Kool Aid. For Halloween I will be making orange koolickles.
Don’t knock til you try it – I’m really looking for other people who have tried it and may have other recipes or ideas for using them – stories about seeing them in the south – that kind of thing

Q&A: My pickles are rotting!!! Help!!!?

Question by anneliserosemayne: My pickles are rotting!!! Help!!!?
I am attempting to make pickles for the first time, and they are molding and soft. Where did I go wrong?

I used the alton brown recipe http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-brown/dill-pickles-recipe/index.html

The scum came up after 3 days just like the recipe says, i skimmed it off using distilled water to wipe the bag. The scum stopped after 4 days, i checked it every day for more scum.

By the 5th day, the brine was very cloudy.

I just checked them today, to transfer them to the fridge, and there was mold growing on the surface, the pickles are covered in white slime, and they are soft.

So, where did i go wrong?

I kept them in a cool room, with a screen over top to keep out stuff, but let air in.

What went wrong???? I am very disappointed.
